James C Vogelzang is president of Chapel of Grace for Women in Prison. Incorporated in September 2007, COG is a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt charity. It is a sister organization with Doing His Time.

The vision for Chapel of Grace began in 2006. COG secured permission from the California Department of Corrections to erect an all-faith, non-denominational chapel on the grounds of Valley State Prison for Women in Chowchilla, California. Valley State Prison for Women is part of a two prison complex that holds over 8,000 women inmates. It is the largest women’s prison complex in the world! It is estimated that the average number of children per inmate is three, totaling over 24,000 children between them all. Studies show that 70% of these 24,000 children will be likely to commit crimes and go to prison themselves. It is imperative to society to transform the mothers of these children and get them back with their families. Its current religious facility accommodates only 120 people. Three services are held each Saturday, but still many women are left outside the chapel due to overcrowding. Even those wishing to find a greater connection with their God are unable to do so.

Chapel of Grace will provide adequate, safe, and secure space for all faiths and 1st Amendment Rights to be exercised.  On a daily basis, the Chapel of Grace will help bring change and transformation to many lives. In addition, the Chapel of Grace will house conference rooms, meeting halls, and counseling rooms.
