No matter how tough an inmate is inside, the thought of “being on the street” scares him or her. During the first 72 hours after release, ex-offenders are uncertain about the basics of life, such as sleeping arrangements, securing food and better clothes. Essentials like birth certificates, social security cards and driver’s licenses seem like mountains to be climbed. Predators selling drugs and offering an easy return to the old lifestyles are everywhere as men and women step off the bus.

Doing HIS Time established a 72 Hour Fund in Denver, CO. The 72 Hour Fund offers vital, tangible, hands-on assistance for former inmates to help them take positive steps towards successful reintegration. For example, women receive a voucher for a free haircut and a manicure. This small “cup of cold water” (see Matthew 10:42) immediately begins restoring of dignity and self-respect. Clothes, bus tokens, job counseling, housing, food and other basic essentials are available on a needs-driven basis for all who make an appointment. Since April 2004, more than 1,500 men and women have felt the “gentle hand of Jesus” on their faces through the outreach of the 72 Hour Fund. Less than 20% have returned to prison.

ATRS

ATRS & 72-Hour Fund Partners for the Good Work: American Textile Recycling Services (ATRS) has partnered with the 72-Hour Fund to help raise money for their good works through the recycling and reuse of clothing and shoes. In addition to the financial support given to the 72-Hour Fund every year, ATRS redirects tons of used and unwanted textiles that could otherwise be destined for local landfills. This is beneficial to both the environment and the local community.

You’ve probably seen one of our recyclers and may have even donated into one of them. They are strategically located throughout various neighborhoods and provide a convenient way for residents to recycle their unwanted garments, while at the same time support a local charity.

To help support the 72-Hour Fund, look for the orange donation box with the 72-Hour Fund logo, and remember: “Orange is Green”.

“Suppose you see a brother or sister who needs food or clothing, and you say, "Well, good-bye and God bless you; stay warm and eat well"-- but then you don't give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?”
